Chapter 1
Proverbs 1:7 ~ Start with God—the first step in learning is bowing down to God;
only fools thumb their noses at such wisdom and learning. (The Message)
Our attitude towards God makes a huge difference in how wise we can be. You can be educated with the highest degrees, but if you have no reverence towards God, you are not truly wise. Anyone who is wise in his own eyes has much to learn. In God's kingdom, what's low is exalted and what is exalted is brought low. Humility is our doorway to greatness.
Have you noticed today's generation hates correction of any kind? We've gotten to the point of tying teachers' hands behind their backs in the schools, telling them to churn out good educated kids into society, but giving them no authority to discipline. You can't produce wisdom without correction.
The book of Proverbs is full of correction. A host of examples of "you do this, you'll get that" and "keep from this bad thing and choose this better thing instead." Yet our society has said "No, that bible has no place in our schools or our society, so you're not allowed to teach from it or even mention it." So what is the result? Just take a look around this world. It's eating the fruit of much foolishness. Oh, and Proverbs has already answered that too:
Proverbs 1:20-25 ~
Wisdom shouts in the streets wherever crowds gather.
She shouts in the marketplaces
and near the city gates
as she says to the people,
"How much longer
will you enjoy
being stupid fools?
Won't you ever stop sneering
and laughing at knowledge?
Listen as I correct you
and tell you what I think.
You completely ignored me
and refused to listen;
you rejected my advice
and paid no attention
when I warned you.
Proverbs 1:29-33 ~
No, you would not learn,
and you refused
to respect the LORD.
You rejected my advice
and paid no attention
when I warned you.
"Now you will eat the fruit
of what you have done,
until you are stuffed full
with your own schemes.
Sin and self-satisfaction
bring destruction and death
to stupid fools.
But if you listen to me,
you will be safe and secure
without fear of disaster."
(Contemporary English Version)
Above all choose Wisdom. Christ himself is Wisdom. Even if you don't have much materially in this life, you will be glad when you come to the end of your life having chosen wisely. It will mean everything.
